Oprah often makes me cry. Most of the time it’s for people who got something they long deserved. Only once in a while is it for someone who’s suffered.
Cry over the evening news for the soldiers families struggling with their loss.
Cry for the animals who are treated as “less than” because they aren’t human.
Cry for the homeless, the mentally ill, the discriminated against.
Cry for yourself. Your losses, your shortcomings, your frustrations.
Cry because it makes you humane, empathic, caring, a better person.
We can’t stop the suffering in the world but we can make it more bearable for the suffering by being a witness. Your tears are your empathy. Your empathy is the act of witnessing.
